Learn more about the artist

This eight metre high steel and light sculpture is typical of artist Martin Richman's work which seeks to address issues of light, colour and space both in the private and public realm.

Originally commissioned as a public sculpture for a site on Bishopsgate in the City of London, adjacent to Spitalfields market the Ascenda was developed out of Richman's earlier ladder works and seemed to slide right into the world of its steel and glass relatives, whilst still retaining a quiet quality of engagement and marking its own presence in a competitive space. In 2001 The Ascenda moved briefly displayed in Mile End Park as part of Sculpture in the Park before moving to Trinity Buoy Wharf in 2005.

It is now on display next to The Riverside Building by the entrance to the pier.
