Following the Government’s advice we have made a decision to postpone "Trinity Buoy Wharf Live: Pete Letanka with The Cape Crusaders", subject to artist's availability. Exact date will be announced in due course.

"Trinity Buoy Wharf Live!" presents Jazz Wednesdays Pete Letanka with The Cape Crusaders – “Celebrating Abdullah Ibrahim”.

Curated by the British jazz pianist, composer and music educator, Pete Letanka, and performed by a hand-picked sextet of London’s finest jazz musicians, Pete’s arrangements of Ibrahim’s music mix flavours of South African township jive with American swing and R‘n’B grooves.

It was a mixture of Pete’s extensive music education work and his South African heritage (Pete’s father grew up in a township in South Africa and was at school with Hugh Masekela) that inspired him to form “The Cape Crusaders”. As a child, Pete would often fall asleep at night listening to his father’s friends from South Africa (who were then living in exile in London to escape the apartheid regime) singing South African songs - their only means to connect them to a country they were forbidden to live freely in.

Pete didn’t want to simply perform Abdullah Ibrahim’s music.  He wanted to approach the music from a different angle, to give audiences a new entry point to explore Ibrahim’s music.  And so he set about writing new arrangements influenced by American jazz, gospel and soul to create a broad programme of music that inspires people to sit and listen, tap a foot or get up and dance.
